Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program Deadline Extended to End of Year

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program deadline for older adults and residents with permanent disabilities to apply for rebates of rent and property taxes paid in 2015 has been extended to December 31, 2016.

The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with permanent disabilities age 18 and older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters, and half of Social Security income is excluded.

Applicants will need to supply their 1099’s for social security, pensions, wages, interest and dividends. Those owning property must provide copies of their 2015 real estate tax bills that have been marked “paid” by their tax collector and renters will be required to have a Rent Certificate signed by their landlord.

Application forms are available at no cost at my district office or by calling (800) 457-2040. Forms are also available at the Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agencies on Aging, and senior centers. Applications are also available online or by calling toll-free (888) 222-9190. Claimants may check the status of their claims online or by calling 1-888-PATAXES.

Assistance in completing applications is available at my district office throughout the filing period.

As of late May, the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue had received 439,686 rebate applications. Rebate distribution will begin on July 1. Rebates approved after June 15, will be distributed as claims are received and processed.

Since the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program’s 1971 inception, older and disabled adults have received more than $5.9 billion in property tax and rent relief. The program is funded by the Pennsylvania Lottery and revenue from slots gaming.
